Ian Wright says he is backing Tottenham Hotspur to secure a top-four finish ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool and Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United because of Harry Kane.
The former striker added that ‘you can’t trust Liverpool’ given their up and down form, whilst he questioned Newcastle’s ability to score goals, even though they scored two against Wolves on Sunday.
But, as Wright mentioned, the goal machine Harry Kane could be the difference because, even on a bad day, he’s bagging a few goals and winning the game.
That’s exactly what happened on Saturday, after Antonio Conte’s side were booted out of the Champions League, Kane’s brace against Nottingham Forest lifted the mood at Hotspur Way.
That’s the England captain’s 20th goal of the season, and if it wasn’t for a certain Erling Haaland, then Kane would be recognised a lot more for his efforts in the Premier League this term.
Nonetheless, when asked to share his thoughts on the top four, Wright issued the following response, as he told Premier League Productions (13/03/23 at 2:25 pm).
“I think Tottenham are going to be okay simply because they have got Harry Kane,” said Wright. “He’s going to score goals.
“You look at Newcastle. They are missing chances. Yes, they scored a couple (against Wolves) and it was good for them, but they will have to do that with their two games in a hand. They have to score goals. I can’t see Tottenham not scoring goals.
“You can’t trust them. You can’t trust Liverpool. At the moment, whoever I am, playing against Liverpool, then I would have a go.
“What it comes down to is that you have Harry Kane. For as long you have Harry Kane and you can create chances, then he is probably going to score them. This is why I will fancy Tottenham to make the top four, regardless of how they play.”
IN TOTTENHAM’S HANDS
It’s Spurs who are sitting in fourth and with the points on board.
Yes, Newcastle and Liverpool have games in hand, but the London club still have to play the duo, away from home, before the final ball is kicked in May.
So, from that perspective, if they can get the job done at Anfield and St James’ Park, then there’s no reason why they shouldn’t secure fourth again.
Whilst they did it last season, and it’s a different story altogether if you are the ones being chased, but that’s where Harry Kane comes into the picture.
