Tim Sherwood has defended the ‘world-class’ Tottenham Hotspur star, Son Heung-min, and claimed that ‘you can’t keep him down’ given his recent struggles, as he told MatchDay Extra on Premier League Productions (03/09/22 at 8:30 pm).
After winning the Premier League’s Golden Boot last season, Son is yet to get off the mark for Antonio Conte’s side this season and Sherwood thinks he is a player that will ‘keep going’ once he gets that first goal back.
The key thing for Son is that he is getting in very good positions and he is missing chances, so it’s just a matter of time before he starts working his magic.
Perhaps that will come in the Champions League for the £22 million star (Guardian) because Conte’s side will host Ligue 1 side Marseille on Wednesday night.
This is where Tottenham’s squad depth is going to be tested because Conte will have to rotate again and again during these coming weeks.
And Sherwood thinks it’s only a matter of time before one of the club’s best players is back to his best.
“You can’t keep a player like him down for too long,” said Sherwood. “He is world-class. He plays for any club in the world. Any club.
“He is so flexible that he can play in many positions. He works tirelessly for the team. I don’t think you can keep him down for long. Once he scores one, then he will keep going.”
EXPECTATIONS ON THE RISE
Son’s quiet start is highlighted even further because fans are now expecting absolute elite performances from the player because of how high he has set the bar.
That’s what happens when you win the Golden Boot and it should be seen more as a compliment rather than a criticism of his performances.
Either way, this is a big week coming up for Tottenham because, after their opening Champions League clash in midweek, it’s only the small matter of facing Manchester City on Saturday.
Spurs beat the Premier League champions both home and away last season and another win from Conte’s men would send out a real signal of intent.
