Ian Wright has warned Newcastle from appointing Frank Lampard as their next manager because things started to ‘unravel’ for him at Chelsea, as he told the Kelly and Wrighty Show.

Newcastle are eight Premier League games without a win, with the man in the dugout an already unpopular figure with the Toon Army faithful and seemingly on the brink.

Defeat to Spurs on Sunday, with the club’s new consortium present, is perhaps the final nail in the coffin for the Manchester United legend.

Amongst several names that have been linked to replace Bruce, one that has been bandied about is that of Lampard’s, with the Telegraph claiming that he is one of the leading contenders for the job.

But Wright explained why he was unsure whether the 43-year-old should be handed the keys to what is now a Bugatti Veyron in the North East and not a Ford Focus.

“Frank’s name was thrown in,” said Wright. “What people said with Frank’s name is that it kind of seemed to unravel for Frank.

“He did spend money on the players and he wasn’t able to fit them into where he needs to fit them in.

“You would like to feel that they (the owners) are coming in to bang, bang and bang. They are coming to make noise.

“You don’t want them to have a manager that isn’t experienced enough with that kind of money, to buy the right players and fit them in. You can’t take that chance.”

Chelsea are another club that have been transformed by the heavy pockets of a billionaire owner and Newcastle will be hoping to follow suit during these coming years.

But perhaps they don’t want to follow suit in regards to them appointing Lampard as their manager as well.

Whilst Lampard, under a transfer embargo and the sale of Eden Hazard, helped steady the West London ship, he was sacked after spending over £100 million the following season and failing to nit together an expensively-assembled group of players.

Those signs are clear that the Magpies shouldn’t go anywhere near the one-time Champions League winner because whilst he has the name as a player, he doesn’t have the reputation as a manager yet.
