Speaking on the Wrighty’s House Podcast, Ian Wright has been discussing Bukayo Saka and William Saliba’s new contracts.
It’s been reported for a little while now that Arsenal are trying to tie their two young stars down to a new deal, but as of yet, there has been no official announcement on that front.
Wright says that these new deals should be imperative for Arsenal, but he’s slightly worried about the pair, stating that they may want to wait until after the World Cup to see if their stock rises based on their performances in Qatar.
Wright compared their situations to Harry Kane’s who was forced to stay at Spurs last summer due to the amount of time left on his deal.
Wright’s contract worries
The pundit gave his view on Saka and Saliba’s situations.
“One of the big problems is Saliba and Saka, their new contracts. We have to think about signing them. I think it will be easier to sign Martinelli down to a new contract, because his World Cup isn’t going to have any bearing on what he’s doing. But Saka and Saliba they might be thinking ‘I’m not going to do a Harry Kane, I’m not going to sign before the World Cup.’ And you can’t blame them for that,” Wright said.
Couldn’t blame them
As much as Arsenal fans would love to believe that Saka and Saliba will be at the Emirates for the rest of their careers, the reality is that they may be set for bigger and better things.
These are two footballers who could play for the Real Madrid and Barcelona’s of the world, and a good World Cup showing may be enough to trigger bids from Europe’s giants.
Of course, waiting until after the World Cup doesn’t necessarily mean they’re angling for a move, but it does give them the power in this situation rather than handing the club all of the control here.
