Liverpool fans were left stunned that Ryan Fraser wasn’t awarded a penalty during Newcastle’s 4-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.
Before Liverpool could play out an action-packed 2-2 draw in north London, their Premier League rivals were in action hours earlier.
Manchester City raced into a 2-0 lead at St James’ Park, before Ederson wiped out Fraser before the break, yet no penalty was awarded.
The Manchester City shot-stopper came rushing off his line to try and deal with a ball in his penalty area, before Joao Cancelo got in front of him and the charging Fraser to deal with the ball.
Cancelo did take control of the ball, but that didn’t stop Ederson from taking out the Scotsman in the process.
Liverpool supporters felt that Newcastle were very unlucky that no penalty was awarded because it was an obvious foul.
VAR didn’t ask the on-field referee to look at the call, which was a story that continued during the later game.
Liverpool themselves were left perplexed as to why Harry Kane’s tackle on Andy Robertson wasn’t checked by VAR, yet the Scotsman’s kick out at Emerson Royal was.
There’s no doubt that Robertson’s kick was a sending off, but so was Kane’s tackle, yet nothing was checked.
Simply put, it was another off-day for the officials in the Premier League because, once again, questionable calls were made.
But Newcastle and Eddie Howe will feel that they are now on the wrong end of a number of them because they had questionable calls go against them at Anfield in midweek.
