The London derby between Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea and Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal at Stamford Bridge this past weekend ended in a 2-2 draw.
It was a very exciting game of football.
Chelsea were 2-0 up at one stage in the Premier League game, but Arsenal launched a comeback and scored twice to earn a point.
Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya was at fault for the second Chelsea goal and almost gifted the Blues another just minutes later.
The penalty decision that went against William Saliba for the first Chelsea goal was controversial as well.
Dermot Gallagher on Robert Sanchez – Gabriel Jesus controversy
Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has now said on Sky Sports News (11:45am, October 23, 2023) that Arsenal themselves should have had a penalty in the London derby.
Gallagher has noted the incident between Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus.
The incident happened in the second half.
Sanchez came off his line to clear a free kick.
The 25-year-old could not get to the ball.
Instead, he went straight into Jesus.
The referee did not signal a penalty.
Gallagher said: “I think if the penalty is given, you can’t argue. He is nowhere near the ball.”
Arsenal wronged vs Chelsea
I think that Arsenal will be very disappointed that they did not get a penalty for the challenge from Robert Sanchez on Gabriel Jesus.
It was a clear foul.
Sanchez did not get the ball and just clattered into the striker.
Now, of course, we do not know if Arsenal would have been able to score from the penalty had it been given, but at least they could have had a chance.
I believe that the referee should have awarded the Gunners a penalty for that incident.
Arsenal are second in the Premier League table at the moment with 21 points from nine matches, level on points with leaders and defending champions Manchester City.
Meanwhile, Chelsea currently find themselves 10th in the standings with 12 points from nine matches.
