Speaking to Liverpool’s club website, Stewart Downing has been full of praise for Harvey Elliott.

The midfielder spent last season out on loan at Blackburn Rovers where he was actually Downing’s teammate.

The former Liverpool man was seemingly very impressed by Elliott, and he thinks he’s destined for big things, stating that his ability his there for all to see, while also praising his maturity levels.

What’s been said?

Downing praised Elliott.

“He found himself playing in the middle, he didn’t do that a lot for us at Blackburn, maybe once or twice. But he took the position at the start of the season, playing ahead of some big players,” said Downing.

“You can see his ability for a young player, he’s quite mature for his age; the way he plays and his positioning, he’s not a young player who runs everywhere and is undisciplined, he’s quite mature for his years.

“Going to Liverpool and being coached by Klopp before he went on loan is massive for him because he’s playing with world-class players every day, the standard will be unbelievable really.

“Barring injury at the start, he would have had a massive run in the team and you’ve got to give him credit for that. He’s definitely got the ability.”

Looks a gem

Downing played with Elliott when he was just 17 years old, and despite the fact Downing has played with and against some of the best players in English football history, he was impressed by the youngster.

As the former England international says, Elliott’s ability is there for all to see. He doesn’t look out of place in one of the best teams in the world, and at just 18, he has so much room to grow and improve.

Elliott could be an absolute superstar in years to come.
