Shaun Derry has claimed that Cody Drameh will be champing at the bit for more football at Leeds United, warning he could leave to get it elsewhere if Marcelo Bielsa doesn’t continue using him.
The 19-year-old enjoyed a very decent senior debut for Leeds this week as Bielsa’s side lost 2-0 to Arsenal in the Carabao Cup.
Despite a few early scares in the form of loose passes, Drameh seemed to pass the test with flying colours.
With Luke Ayling still out, there’s definitely room for the Thorp Arch graduate in the squad for Premier League games.
The teenager has an appetite for the big time now because let’s face it, if the Emirates is your first game then you’ll want to keep that buzz going every week.
And Derry has warned to BBC Radio Leeds that Drameh will have no qualms about looking to leave Elland Road if he doesn’t remain a regular fixture in the senior squad.
He said: “I think when you make your debut, you want to make your second and your third and your fourth appearance pretty quickly, otherwise you can get lost in the system. And as good as the football club are, you do not want to be playing for the Under-23s too long.
“So, he either plays for this football club or he goes and kind of gets opportunities at someone else’s football club to be a first team player because I think that is the next moment once you made your debut.”
Derry is right but unfortunately for Leeds, they can’t guarantee Drameh anything.
United are genuniely in a relegation battle so far this season and that means less room for experimentation with regards to young prospects.
And with Leeds out of the League Cup now, it’s all about the Premier League from now until the first week of January, when the FA Cup begins.
