Paul Merson has questioned the potential transfer fee Liverpool will have to pay for Sofyan Amrabat ahead of the January transfer window opening.

The Fiorentina midfielder enjoyed a fruitful World Cup campaign after helping Morocco create history by becoming the first African nation to reach the semi-finals.

Amrabat came out of the World Cup as one of the standout performers and Merson asked ‘how much would he have cost six weeks ago’.

It’s pretty obvious that if Amrabat does leave in January, then there will be World Cup tax added to his transfer fee and those on Merseyside might just be the ones paying it.

Cody Gakpo is through the doors, but it’s the midfield that is the biggest area of concern and there is talk that Klopp wants him on Merseyside.

Liverpool fans might not have expected it, but they are sitting outside of the Champions League places and they have a fight on their hands, as Merson told Soccer Special on Sky Sports.

“I don’t think they are a shoo-in for the top four with this team and the injuries,” said Merson “But they won’t be far behind.

“In this market, you are talking about the lad Amrabat from Fiorentina. How much is he going to cost and how much would he have cost six weeks ago.”

LIVERPOOL’S BOXING DAY WIN

The Reds returned to Premier League action on Boxing Day by picking up all three points against Aston Villa.

Whilst it’s a great start for Klopp after the World Cup break, during that game, they did concede a number of big chances, and in truth, Villa should have had three or four goals to their name.

Jordan Henderson, Thiago and Fabinho were the ones selected in the middle of the park, but that new midfielder is still needed if Liverpool want to avoid the scare of missing out on Champions League football for next season.
