
Some Arsenal fans on social media aren’t best pleased with Michael Owen after he claimed that Karim Benzema’s first goal against Switzerland was better than Dennis Bergkamp’s famous strike against Newcastle.
There were certainly comparisons to be drawn between Benzema’s goal and Bergkamp’s effort, both goals came off the back of two fantastic touches before a composed finish.
However, Arsenal fans were unwilling to concede that Benzema’s strike was better than their legend’s, and to be fair, we can understand why.
Bergkamp’s effort vs Newcastle was a stroke of genius, and it’s the type of thing Bergkamp was known for, whereas it could be argued that Benzema’s goal on Monday was more of a fluke as his first touch didn’t seem as pre-planned as Bergkamp’s all those years ago.
The reality is that both goals were absolutely fantastic and we should enjoy the pair of them for what they are, but Arsenal fans are very protective of Bergkamp and his legacy, and it’s fair to say that they weren’t pleased with Owen’s suggestion.
