Celtic fans have taken to Twitter in delight after the club announced that Stephen Welsh had signed a new four-year contract at Paradise.

The 21-year-old has broke into the first-team this season after rising through the academy ranks, and he’s been impressive.

Welsh has made 16 appearances in all competitions, where he’s been trusted to play in big games such as the Europa League clashes with AC Milan and LOSC Lille.

Having spent over a decade at the club, it’s great to see one of Celtic’s own blossom in the first-team.

In what has been a difficult season, Welsh’s progress can definitely be considered a shining light.

The Coatbridge-born defender has become a regular in the first-team since the turn of the year, and he hasn’t let anyone down.

Hopefully, whoever comes in to replace Neil Lennon recognises his talent, and allows him to continue growing in the starting XI.

To further emphasise Welsh’s potential, he’s earned 13 caps for Scotland’s Under-19 side – he’s also represented his country at U17 and U16 level.

If he keeps up his form, surely it won’t be long until Steve Clarke starts taking a closer look at his abilities.
