Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Jurgen Klopp has suggested that Rhys Williams is in line for a start against Manchester United.
The Welshman has been in and out of the Liverpool starting XI this season, but with Ozan Kabak out of action he’s once again set to be called upon.
Liverpool have a severe lack of options at centre-back at the moment, and judging by what Klopp said in his press conference, Williams will start against United.
“That gives you questions in the centre of defence, are you confident you can go into the game with Rhys Williams an Nat at centre-back at Old Trafford,” one journalist asked.
“Yep,” Klopp replied.
“My job is to train them from time to time and you cannot just put the boy on the pitch and if he’s not in shape in that moment you have to find another solution. You don’t line a player up, especially a young one, and just hope that it will work out. At the moment when the boys show up in training when they have the momentum then it is a good moment for them, and yeah, Rhys for example is now in a really good moment and that helps obviously,” Klopp continued.
Williams has played in some massive games for Liverpool this season, but they don’t come much bigger than this.
Liverpool need to beat United to keep their hopes of finishing in the top four alive, and with United being so potent in attack Williams will have a serious job on his hands.
Time will tell whether or not Williams starts, but it seems likely after Klopp’s comments here.
