Newcastle United right-back DeAndre Yedlin told BBC Radio Newcastle that he is ready to step up and make his first league start for the club this Saturday against Aston Villa at Villa Park (5.30pm kick-off).

The United States international has made three substitute appearances for the Magpies in the league so far this term, scoring one goal and he was awarded his first start on Tuesday night’s 2-0 EFL Cup victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

But now with the suspension of previous first-choice right-back Vurnon Anita following the Dutchman’s straight red card against Wolves last Saturday, Yedlin is ready to fill in and take his opportunity.

“If I’m chosen to play in those games then I’ll give everything I can,” the 23-year-old told BBC Radio Newcastle.

“I have and just try to keep attacking and helping the attack and try to keep a shut out in defence because that’s the most important thing as a defender.”

Yedlin arrived on Tyneside from Tottenham Hotspur for £5m during the summer after spending last season on loan at rivals Sunderland but is now committed to getting the Magpies straight back into the Premier League following their relegation in May.

The rapid right-back also knows he has big boots to fill after Anita’s stellar start to the season.

“Vurnon has been unbelievable and he’s a guy who I’ve been learning a lot from so he’s been a big help to me,” Yedlin continued.

“He’s taken me under his wing as soon as I came in so he’s a great guy and I’m learning a lot from him, just how he plays and positioning wise because we’re similar sort of players.

“I might be (a bit quicker) but I can learn a lot from him so I’m trying to absorb as much as I can.”
