The veteran Reading striker bemoaned the fact that his team were the better side in last night’s home defeat to Aston Villa.

Veteran Reading frontman Yann Kermorgant has, in an interview with the club’s official website, insisted that the Royals were the better side despite losing 2-1 to Steve Bruce’s Aston Villa at the Majeski Stadium last night.

The Frenchman, who turns 35 next month, netted ten minutes after half-time last night to cancel out Jonathan Kodjia’s first-half effort. However, a last-minute penalty from Villa’s Jordan Ayew ensured that the visitors went back to Birmingham with all three points.

But Kermorgant’s annoyance was palpable while talking to the Royals’ official website as he bemoaned what he considered an undeserved loss.

“That’s a game we should have won – by far I think we were the best team on the pitch… but we conceded two goals including a penalty in the last minute, and it’s really painful tonight.

“When we got the equaliser, we should have been more careful to not go forward too much – I know that we wanted to win the game, and that’s a good thing, but we had to be careful as well and track back when they counter-attacked.

“That’s what happened in the last minute and we were perhaps not close enough; when they get into the box, there is danger.”

Reading now have the chance to bounce back immediately as they travel to Rotherham at the weekend, who lie bottom of the Championship having just sacked manager Alan Stubbs.

But, after the game against Villa, it’s now no win in the last four games for the Royals, meaning that no match can be taken for granted – especially in the characteristically volatile Championship.
