Yann Karamoh is a player who Newcastle United are targeting this summer, but they face competition for his signature from Monaco.

Yann Karamoh has indirectly sent a message to Newcastle by insisting that the chances of first-team football at a certain club will play a crucial role in helping him decide where his future lies, the Shields Gazette reports.

The Shields Gazette reports that the 18-year-old is on the Magpies’ radar after a fantastic season with Caen in Ligue 1, but is also being pursued by Monaco.

And the Ivory Coast-born France youth international has suggested that he will not seek to move away if the offer on the table is unlikely to see him enjoy regular football in the first-team.

“If I had the choice, I would go to a club where I would play,” he said, as reported by the Shields Gazette.

“I do not want to go to Monaco to go on loan.

“When I see (Allan) Saint-Maximin – who has been on loan at Bastia – I think ‘I just played 35 matches this season’, and I wonder if it’d be worth it.

“I want to play. I want to go to a club where I could continue to mature in two or three years.”

Following Karamoh’s impressive breakthrough season – he scored five times and contributed four assists in the top flight – it is arguably not surprising that Newcastle are keen on signing him, and the fact that Monaco are interested should provide an indication of his quality given some of the prospects they have uncovered in recent years.

However, despite his potential, it would arguably be a gamble for Rafa Benitez to commit to a deal given that first-team football is a priority for the player.

Newcastle are preparing for their return to the Premier League, so Benitez would surely prefer to rely on much more established players during their first year back, using a player like Karamoh much more sparingly to aid his development.

But with first-team football a crucial factor in Karamoh’s decision, Benitez may now need to weigh up whether it is worth taking that chance and offering the youngster the assurances he is looking for.
