Southampton youngster Yan Valery sat down for an exclusive interview with the club’s official website, and shared the first words he said when he heard that the Saints wanted to sign him.

The 19-year-old joined Southampton from Rennes in 2015, and he has gone on to make 12 senior appearances in all competitions for the south coast club.

The right-back has really impressed this season, especially since Ralph Hasenhüttl took over on December 5th, playing 11 games during the Austrian’s reign.

It seems like Valery has a really bright future ahead of him in the game, and that should really excite the Saints fans.

The teenager spoke exclusively to the club’s official website, and opened up on how he felt when he heard that Southampton wanted to bring him to St Mary’s when he was just 16-years-old:

“I didn’t have an agent, so Southampton came to my parents and told them they were interested. Ever since I was young, I’d always wanted to play in England, so when I heard that I knew I had to take that opportunity. It was the best Academy in England – a good club, with Morgan Schneiderlin, Sadio Mané… good players. I just said ‘if this is true, I won’t even think twice. I will go’.”

Hasenhüttl will be wary of over-playing the Southampton youngster, and burning him out.

Valery certainly has the raw ingredients to go on and become a star, and the manner in which he is managed over the next few years will have a huge bearing on whether or not he goes on to fulfil his potential.
