Gary and Phil Neville had some harsh words for the ex-Stoke City player who has since joined Liverpool.
The 26-year-old signed for the Potters in 2015 from Internazionale, and impressed fans in the Premier League with his trickery and match-winning ability.
Last term, Shaqiri stood out again for the most part, but was powerless to prevent the club from slipping into the Championship, and he was then on the receiving end of some strong words from the Neville brothers.
Shaqiri clearly has not forgotten the remarks, and has now decided the address them following his bargain £13.5 million transfer to Anfield.
He said, as reported by the Telegraph: “They [the Nevilles] were Manchester United players. Maybe they don’t like Liverpool! Some people like you, some people don’t like you. I don’t want to comment on what is said by people I don’t know.
“I think I played three years already in the Premier League and I’ve proved I can play here. I can score goals and give assists. I know the league well. I have a lot of experience. I was the top scorer in the [Stoke] team with goals and assists, so I don’t have to say any more.
“I think everybody knows that [I was the best player last season]. My conscience is clear.”
Shaqiri recorded stats of eight goals and seven assists in 36 Premier League starts last term, but did harbour some criticisms along the way for his poor body language and distance from his teammates.
Liverpool fans excited to see him turn out in red next season do not appear to be too concerned about any of that though, and they were pleased to see the star sticking up for himself against the two ex-Red Devils:
