Barcelona want Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani Lo Celso with boss Xavi seemingly expecting big things.
Tottenham misfit Giovani Lo Celso could be part of history at Barcelona if Xavi gets his way this summer.
Spanish reporter Javi Miguel, best known for his work with newspaper AS, has reported on Barcelona’s interest in Lo Celso.
This has been rumbling for a few weeks now but Miguel claims that Lo Celso is one of three signings Xavi has requested.
Joao Cancelo and Oriol Romeu are the other targets with Barcelona eyeing up a trio of signings with Premier League history.
Miguel intriguingly adds that Xavi thinks Barcelona can ‘do something historic’ this coming season if those three signings arrive.
Maybe that’s winning La Liga and the Champions League, maybe it’s going a season unbeaten, who knows – but Xavi is seemingly confident that Lo Celso can make a big difference.
The ball is now in Barcelona’s court as they attempt to get signings done, but Tottenham fans may be baffled.
Giovani Lo Celso hasn’t worked out for Tottenham
Lo Celso to Tottenham was one of the great transfer sagas of the summer 2019 transfer window.
The rumours felt like they went on for months on end as Tottenham attempted to convince Real Betis into a deal.
Lo Celso had just racked up 16 goals in the 2018-19 season and Tottenham finally struck an agreement.
The total deal ended up being worth a huge £42million – £15million for a loan and £27million for the permanent move.
The move just hasn’t worked out with Lo Celso scoring just nine times in 84 games for Spurs, and he has spent the last 18 months out on loan with Villarreal.
Maybe Tottenham’s new attack-minded coach Ange Postecoglou can give Lo Celso another chance, but it seems more likely that the 27-year-old will move on.
Going from unwanted at Tottenham to making history at Barcelona sounds bizarre though and Xavi must believe heavily in the Argentinian to have this lofty stance.
Barcelona face Real Betis battle for Lo Celso
Tottenham would surely be open to a deal with Barcelona and may even find that he has multiple suitors.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Real Betis have made an approach to re-sign Lo Celso.
Romano claims that two or three clubs now want to sign Lo Celso and Betis are keen to get a deal moving.
Lo Celso may soon face a tough decision; an emotional return to Betis, where he played his best football, or the chance to ‘make history’ at Barcelona.
Either way, Tottenham will surely be hoping to cash in and reinvest the cash in Postecoglou’s squad.
