Barcelona manager Xavi has told FIFA on Twitter that Liverpool ace Ibrahima Konate has been one of the best two centre-backs at the World Cup so far – alongside Dayot Upamecano, with France winning both of their opening games.

Konate, 23, came into the tournament with just two caps to his name for France. But he started against Australia with Raphael Varane still returning from injury. Then, he came on for the last 15 minutes in France’s win over Denmark.

He has certainly impressed – but it will not come as a surprise to Liverpool fans. Konate has been excellent for Jurgen Klopp’s side since his move to the club from Leipzig, where he played alongside Bayern Munich defender Upamecano.

FIFA held a quick Q&A session with Barcelona boss Xavi on the best players at the World Cup so far. He was asked for his best central defenders and chose Konate and Upamecano: “Now, in my opinion, Upamecano and Konate.”

Xavi: Liverpool ace Konate one of best two centre-backs at World Cup

His performance against Australia was solid, even if the Socceroos did open the scoring through Craig Goodwin. France also failed to keep a clean sheet against Denmark, but when he came on, he helped nullify Denmark’s late push.

Konate is a player with extreme potential. He might have only played 33 times for Liverpool so far, but he is seen as the long-term future of Klopp’s back line. Injury and taking time to bed in at Anfield has limited his game time, so far.

Is he one of the best at the World Cup so far? It is difficult to say at this stage – but Aymeric Laporte has been superb for Spain. Thiago Silva looked excellent for Brazil – and there are plenty of others that could be in with a shout.
