Celtic will surely have to spend heavily in the summer, in order to compete in Europe next season.

Barcelona legend Xavi opened up on his affection for Celtic, when speaking exclusively to the Daily Record, and urged Brendan Rodgers to go out and spend heavily on a top-class player.

The Hoops have once again been dominant on the domestic front this season, and currently sit six points clear of second placed Rangers, with a game in hand on their rivals, although their form on the continent has left a lot to be desired.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is seen during a training session at Lennoxtown on December 29, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Rodgers’ side head to Pittodrie to take on Aberdeen today, and will be looking to stretch their lead at the top back to nine points, although that will be easier said than done against Derek McInnes’ team.

Xavi, who won an incredible eight league titles, four Champions League trophies, two European Championships and a World Cup throughout his illustrious career, urged the Glasgow giants to go big in the transfer market in the summer, as quoted by the Daily Record:

Xavi Hernandez of FC Barcelona waves during their victory parade after winning the UEFA Champions League Final at the Camp Nou Stadium on June 7, 2015 in Barcelona, Spain.

“Celtic are a club that I have an affection for. But if they want to compete in the Champions League they must add more proven quality. The transfer market has gone crazy over the last 12 months. Neymar changed everything. Not many clubs can spend 100, 150, or even 200 million Euros on a player – but 15-20
million Euros needs to be where any club with ambitions, like Celtic, needs to be spending.”

If Celtic go on to win the league, this season will surely still have to go down as a success, but progress on the continent will be of paramount importance next term, and in order to do that, the Hoops board will have to back Rodgers sufficiently in the summer transfer market.
