Xabi Alonso – Liverpool celebrates scoring his team’s first goal against Blackburn Rovers
Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso has told the Guardian that it still frustrates him that he failed to win the league at Anfield.
The Spanish midfielder was a huge player for the Reds during his time on Merseyside, playing a key part in their Champions League success in 2005.
He was also a key player in the side that came close to winning the Premier League title under Rafa Benitez as they ran Manchester United all the way in the title race.
That side saw him featuring alongside stars such as Steven Gerrard, Javier Mascherano, Jamie Carragher and Fernando Torres in arguably the best Liverpool side of the last decade or more.

And he admits his failure to win the title with those players still frustrates him to this day, despite the success he has enjoyed elsewhere.
“This side did not win anything together but we felt we could win everything,” he told the Guardian.
“We had a few stupid draws at home and in the end, that’s why we did not win the league. We always had that feeling, that belief and confidence. It frustrates me so, so much.”

Reflecting on that Liverpool team, it is hard to understand how they didn’t manage to win the league.
It was a team full of talent, to say the least, and a manager in Rafa Benitez who knew what it took to win league titles after his time in Spain.
It was not to be though and Alonso, as well as several others in that squad, will likely continue looking back on it with regret for a number of years.
