Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has hailed manager Jurgen Klopp in an interview with the club’s official website, saying his impact has not only been on the pitch.

The German took charge at Anfield last October, replacing Brendan Rodgers at the helm.

It has been an exciting first year in charge of the club for him, one in which he has led them to both the Capital One Cup final and the Europa League final.

The transformation on the pitch has been notable as his Liverpool team have fully embraced the style he wants his sides to play.

Alonso acknowledges that but says his appointment has also had a huge effect away from the pitch.

“He was a big boost for the club and the city – that such a prestigious manager wanted to manage Liverpool,” he told the club’s official website.

“That gave the people a lot of pride, recognising how special the club is. He has embraced the culture of Liverpool, the tradition but also the hunger to deliver and do something important.”

Liverpool have made a strong start to this season, currently sitting fourth in the table, three points behind joint leaders Manchester City and Arsenal.

They have arguably been this season’s most enjoyable team to watch, currently sitting as the second highest scorers in the division with 18 goals to their name.

They already have several impressive wins under their belt, having beaten Arsenal, Chelsea and Leicester City in their first seven games and Alonso is one who has been impressed.

“They are playing very well,” he added. “They are finding how they want to play and they are so enjoyable to watch. They are playing great games and they have beaten Arsenal and Chelsea in London.”
