Wyndham Clark was given a really rough ride by New York golf fans during the US Open at Shinnecock Hills last week.

Clark performed admirably all week long at Shinnecock and, considering the abuse he received, it was remarkable that he was able to win the US Open in the end.

The 32-year-old is now a two-time major champion and he has proven that he has an elite mentality.

How did you feel about the New York crowd's treatment of Wyndham Clark?

Wyndham Clark is one of the toughest characters in the game, and he proved that at Shinnecock Hills during the US Open.

Some of the abuse that Clark received at the US Open was unsavory at best, and truly disgusting at worst.

Clark handled the fans’ unacceptable behavior at Shinnecock Hills very well, and he had the last laugh by winning his national Open for the second time.

Wyndham Clark reveals the meanest abuse he heard during the US Open

Clark responded when asked what was the meanest thing he heard shouted in his direction at Shinnecock, when speaking on the Pardon My Take Podcast.

There was a lot of stuff! A lot of people telling me I was going to choke. A lot of people saying no-one likes you, he said.

The cheers when it rolled off the green, that was some of the craziest stuff. I knew when I hit a good shot it was when they were quiet.

When I hit a bad shot it was like I made a 30 footer for birdie. They were clapping and cheering!

There were a handful of people who got kicked out. There was some stuff that people were saying, obviously the locker stuff.

Any time I missed a putt people were saying ‘bad day to be a locker’ or ‘don’t let him in the locker room’. It was just constant chirps, but whatever!

Wyndham Clark desperately wanted to react

The two-time US Open champion revealed how he was desperate to give some attitude back to the fans who had been abusing him.

Any time I made a putt I wanted to do something, or point at them. But I was like, it’s not a Ryder Cup, he said.

They already don’t like me, let’s not make them hate me even more, so I didn’t do it.

I would say the one time I showed emotion was on 16 when I made that putt.

It’s funny, I made it and yelled and nobody else did. Five people were like ‘yeah’ and it sounded like it was from the rafters, you could barely hear it.

Wyndham Clark deserves huge praise for the way in which he retained his focus during the final two rounds at the US Open.

It would have been so easy for him to buckle under the pressure, but he proved just how tough a competitor he really is
