Gareth Ainsworth, the Wycombe Wanderers manager, has surged up the betting to be Barnsley’s next boss.

Ainsworth began the week at 10/1 with Sky Bet, but is now as short as 3/1 – behind only Simon Grayson, the long-term favourite (2/1).

The 45-year-old is one of the Football League’s longest serving managers, having taken the Wycombe reins in September 2012.

And after a couple of near misses, Ainsworth has finally led the Chairboys back to League One, where they will face Barnsley next season.

The Tykes were relegated on the Championship’s final day, and parted with Jose Morais shortly afterwards.

Mick McCarthy, the Barnsley born former Oakwell favourite, is 5/1 to succeed the Portuguese, ahead of ex-Reds Bobby Hassell and Grant McCann (both 7/1).

Grayson recently left Bradford City – the only first of five League One clubs with whom he has failed to gain promotion.
