WWE’s Drew McIntyre shares how he picked supporting Rangers over Celtic

Rangers-supporting Drew McIntyre is impressed with what he’s seen at Ibrox.

WWE superstar Drew McIntyre has told BBC Sport that he was made to pick between supporting Celtic and Rangers at a young age – and picked the latter.

Rangers have a host of celebrity fans, from musician Amy MacDonald to chef Gordon Ramsay, and McIntyre has now admitted his love for the Gers too.

A wrestler for more than 15 years, McIntyre – real name Andrew McLean Galloway – was a WWE star before heading back to independent wrestling as Drew Galloway, and returned to WWE again in 2017, reprising the McIntyre character.

As far as Scottish wrestlers go, McIntyre is one of the best, and became the first Scotsman to win the WWE NXT Championship before heading to Raw’s main roster in April of this year.

Many WWE wrestlers have pinned their colours to the mast of Premier League clubs; Finn Balor has been a Tottenham fan for many years, whilst Triple H is known as a West Ham ‘supporter’ too.

Now, McIntyre has revealed his allegiance in an interview with BBC Sport, revealing that he supports Rangers – but it came about in a fascinating way.

McIntyre claims that, when he was a baby, he was told to crawl towards either a Celtic or a Rangers shirt, as members of his family support either side of the Old Firm rivalry – and he chose Rangers.

McIntyre added his view on Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, feeling that he has impressed so far and would love to see him win a trophy this season, but feels he will bring good times back to Ibrox by challenging Celtic in the next couple of seasons.

“My family supports Rangers and Celtic and, when you are a baby, they leave out the two tops and you crawl towards one of them,” said McIntyre. “I believe I crawled to the Rangers top when I was a kid.”

“Gerrard played with his heart, which is something we were missing. He is drilling it into his team and we are on the rise. In the next couple of seasons I think we are going to be right back in it, competing with Celtic. It would be sweet to win something this season but I am being realistic – and it is amazing that we are back where we are right now,” he added.
