Darren Bent has claimed that Marcel Sabitzer would be a ‘very good signing’ for Tottenham, but he believes they are looking at the ‘wrong’ RB Leipzig player.

The former striker thinks Dayot Upamecano is the man they should be looking at, but Bent made it clear that someone like Sabitzer would be an ‘upgrade’ on Harry Winks, as he told talkSPORT (16/08/20 at 2:50 pm).

Back in March, German outlet, Bild, reported that Jose Mourinho is stepping up his pursuit of Sabitzer and the goal-scoring midfielder has a £46 million price tag over his head.

Bent was told on talkSPORT radio that Spurs are still looking at the Champions League semi-finalist, as he backed a potential move for the Austrian.

“I think he would be a very good signing,” Bent told talkSPORT. “I do believe that people are looking at the wrong RB Leipzig player because we have spoken about their centre-half [Upamecano]. What a performance he put on the other night.

“I think people need to be looking at him. But as far as the midfield player goes, I think he would suit Spurs down to the ground. I think he’s an upgrade [on Harry Winks].

“You look at Spurs, they have just got Hojbjerg in and they are talking about this midfielder here. When are they going to start addressing the back end [of the pitch]?”

Tottenham completed the signing of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg recently and he will add much-needed bite and depth to Spurs’ midfield.

It could be argued that a bit more flair, creativity and goals are needed in the middle of the park, so a signing like Sabitzer would suit the North London club down to the ground.

Mourinho has already seen what Sabitzer is all about when he played his part in Spurs getting knocked out of the Champions League – he netted a brace during that game and his Leipzig side are now preparing for a clash against PSG in the Champions League semi-final tonight.
