Some Liverpool fans are shocked over reports that Jurgen Klopp feels Nathaniel Phillips can play a ‘big role’ for their side next season.

The Sunday World say that Klopp has been so convinced by the Liverpool defender that he believes it’s possible to have him in the Reds’ squad for next year.

Phillips has done an admirable job at the heart of Liverpool’s defence this term, as those around him have been struck by injury.

However, while many Liverpool fans recognise Phillips’ contribution to the team, there are still some doubts over his ability to perform again next term.

With Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and potentially Ibrahima Konate involved, Phillips will have to reach new heights if he is to break into the team.

And many Liverpool supporters are seemingly surprised that Klopp intends to keep hold of Phillips for the long-term.

Whatever happens for Phillips from here he has surely done enough to prove he can play at the top level.

The 24-year-old has looked solid in Liverpool’s defence, and has rarely made any game-changing mistakes.

It is clear that his skill-set, perhaps, isn’t the most ideally suited to Liverpool’s defensive strategy, though.

Phillips may well play better in a low block – where his main job is to soak up pressure – than having to play on the halfway line in a high-pressing system like Liverpool’s.

But Klopp seemingly has faith in the towering defender, and it will be interesting to see if his performances go up another level, with higher quality defenders around him.
