Arsenal fans cannot believe that Mikel Arteta has claimed that his side deserved to go through against Villarreal last night on BT Sport.
Arsenal exited the Europa League yesterday, after failing to beat Villarreal at the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners only had four shots on target across the two legs, but Arteta suggested that his side were unfortunate not to make it to the final.
He said: “We are devastated. Really disappointed. We have to congratulate Villarreal. We tried everything until the last minute. I think we deserved to win the game but the details define these ties.
“We had three big chances, they didn’t have anything but they are through. So many things happened to us, and so many players were just trying to compete not at their best.”
However, Arsenal fans clearly disagree with their manager and they have been stunned by his analysis of the match.
In fairness to Arteta, Arsenal did come very close to scoring late on when Pierre Emerick Aubameyang’s header hit the post.
However, it is difficult to really suggest that they deserved to make it through.
When the pressure was on, Arsenal never really turned up or had a concerted period of dominance in the game.
Villarreal’s defence was largely comfortable in the fixture and aside from a few nervy moments, they were untroubled.
Arteta’s comments likely stem from frustration, as the pressure mounts on his job.
The Arsenal boss is now facing huge questions over his future, with the Gunners failing to make any real progress this season.
