Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react after Raj Chohan of the BBC shared an unbelievable statistic involved Mike Ashley.

What’s the story?

Well, Chohan revealed that Newcastle actually have a higher net spend under Ashley than Liverpool do under Fenway Sports Group since 2019.

Ever since the Reds won the Champions League, Newcastle have a £94m net spend compared to Liverpool’s £19m – that is genuinely hard to process.

Of course, some of that is down to the fact Liverpool have sold players for decent fees, whereas Newcastle have mainly added players.

However, it’s still a highly concerning statistic which suggests FSG aren’t doing enough to back Jürgen Klopp.

One fan below even said this is the exact reason supporters are worried about life after Klopp – a fair point.

On the surface, this sounds like a very worrying statistic.

However, it must be put into context.

Aside from the aforementioned point about Liverpool making more money through sales, the two clubs have had different needs since 2019.

Ashley was tasked with bolstering a stale squad in danger of being relegated, so spending was necessary.

In Liverpool’s case, they had just become champions of Europe with a squad where most players are in their prime, so reinforcements were less necessary.

In our view, the numbers would hopefully read differently if the Reds were languishing in sixth place, for example.

Nevertheless, FSG do need to spend a bit more to keep Liverpool competitive, as others around them constantly strengthen.

For now, let’s see what the Liverpool fans on Twitter have been saying about this statistic…
