Paul Merson has told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports that he noticed Ryan Mason looking in ‘disbelief’ at Tottenham’s performance during their win against Southampton in midweek.
After firing Jose Mourinho, days before the League Cup final, Daniel Levy handed the keys of Tottenham to a fresh-faced 29-year-old.
Not many would have expected such a situation, but on Sunday, Mason will lead his boyhood club out of Wembley against Manchester City.
Merson was making the earlier point that Spurs should have kept Mourinho on for the final and warned what will happen if they open up the game against Man City.
“This one-off game on Sunday, you turn up and open this game up and this will be a light bulb job,” said Merson. “They will be putting light bulbs in the scoreboard at the end of this match.
“Even I could see the manager, Mason, I could see him even looking in disbelief at Tottenham sometimes when they were playing in that game.
“Even he was looking like ‘wow, is this really happening?’. And that’s what you are up against.”
There clearly has to be more to the Mourinho sacking because allowing someone of his expertise to leave days before the final is staggering.
Mourinho has already beaten Manchester City since he joined Spurs, he has won 12 out of 14 finals, never lost in 90 minutes and was the last man to beat Pep Guardiola in a final.
On top of that, it’s been over ten years since Spurs won a trophy, so how a 29-year-old is more suited to Mourinho for this one-off game is baffling.
But if Mason does the business then Daniel Levy will look like a genius and the ex-midfielder’s stock will rise to incredible heights.
