Leeds put up a valiant performance away to Chelsea, with a late Jorginho penalty snatching a point away for the Yorkshire side, yet Joe Gelhardt’s goal will live long in the memories of supporters.
The 19-year-old striker came on in the second half and made an immediate impact as Gelhardt bagged his professional goal for Leeds to make it 2-2 to the visitors with seven minutes to go.
However, Leeds were unable to keep hold of the scoreline as the Blues won another penalty which Jorginho slotted away with ease. Despite the result, though, losses to Watford and Southampton this weekend kept the bottom six of the Premier League unchanged.
It was a crushing blow for Leeds, who should have taken at least a point away against the European champions. However, supporters were buzzing for Gelhardt after scoring his first goal for the senior side.
The former Wigan Athletic star has been one of the U-23 side’s best players this season. And Marcelo Bielsa, who signed the striker last year, has begun integrating the youngster into the first team.
And the decision seems to have paid off. Gelhardt was barely on the pitch before firing the ball past Eduoard Mendy with a fine finish to fire Leeds back into the fixture. Although the final result was not what the Whites wanted, it was still a great moment for the youngster.
