Arsenal fans cannot believe that they actually offered Shkodran Mustafi a new contract last year, after learning that he has already been released by Schalke.
Mustafi turned down a deal with Arsenal last summer (Football London) and went on to sign for Schalke in January on a permanent deal.
The German central defender’s stay with Schalke has not lasted long though.
Schalke announced that they are releasing Mustafi just six months after signing him today.
And Arsenal fans felt that the news was rather damning on Mikel Arteta, given he felt that Mustafi was good enough to be handed a new deal in 2020.
It is worth noting that Schalke have just been relegated, so their decision may have had something to do with their finances.
However, Mustafi hasn’t massively impressed since leaving Arsenal, and is likely not to be considered a great loss to the side.
Arteta is in charge of a rebuild at Arsenal this summer, and he may have to be more ruthless if he is to get the Gunners back to past glories.
There is plenty of players in Arsenal’s squad who have consistently shown themselves to not be of the quality required to get the North London club back in the top four.
And plenty of departures should be expected at the Emirates Stadium this summer, as Arsenal look to rebuild.
