Rio Ferdinand has shared a video of his instant reaction to John W Henry’s statement apologising for Liverpool’s part in the European Super League.
The BT Sport pundit uploaded the video to his YouTube channel, and watching him respond to this breaking story in real-time was very interesting.
“Wow, this has just popped up on my phone. ‘We have let you down, I am responsible.’ He must have heard us talking earlier. Liverpool owner John W Henry apologises to fans, Klopp and the players and says he won’t walk away after Super League fiasco,” Ferdinand said.
“We’ve just been sat here for the last 15 minutes asking for these owners and people who were at the table deciding about the Super League, we were asking for information and answers to questions. I’m just reading it here ‘it goes without saying that the project would not have gone ahead without the support of fans.’”
“So why didn’t you speak to the fans then? Why didn’t you test the temperature? Speak to your manager who is in touch with the fans, the players who live in the communities nearby where the fans are. They have to deal with the fans on a day to day basis, they could have given you answers.”

Ferdinand then read the passage from Henry’s statement about the tough year brought on by the pandemic, before responding:
“If you thought it had been tough this year, why did you even consider joining this stupid thing.”
“’I can promise you I will do whatever I can to further that.’ Maybe selling the club is the best thing you could do mate. Well, that’s the first owner I’ve seen come out and speak, so I congratulate him on that, but Jesus, they never knew the power of the fans, they never knew the response, they never considered the fans. They don’t know football man.”

This is a passionate and considered response from Ferdinand.
The centre-back may have his allegiances to Manchester United, but he did a great job of capturing how Liverpool fans must be feeling after seeing Henry’s statement.
Most football fans across the country probably responded to Henry’s statement in the same way. The Liverpool owner raised more questions than answers and he didn’t do all that much to divert attention from himself.
It was great to see him own up and take responsibility, but, like Ferdinand, we have to wonder why the fans, the manager and the players weren’t consulted.
