Speaking on the Talking Transfers Podcast, Graeme Bailey has been discussing Jan Oblak’s future amid links to Tottenham Hotspur.
It was reported by the Evening Standard earlier this week that Tottenham were keen to sign Oblak as Hugo Lloris’ successor, but Manchester United have also been credited with an interest.
Bailey has his ear to the ground on this one, and he says that it wouldn’t surprise him at all of Oblak ended up at Old Trafford next year with David De Gea potentially going in the other direction
Oblak to Old Trafford
Bailey shared what he knows about this situation.
“It’s an interesting one, it’s not happy campers at the minute. It’s his last chance for a big move, he’s always fancied United and United have always liked Oblak. There could be some sort of, not a swap deal, but if United let De Gea go to Atletico for free, they’ll get a reduction from them. It wouldn’t surprise me if Oblak was in goal for United next season and De Gea was there,” Bailey said.
Spurs need him more
With all due respect to Hugo Lloris, Tottenham are more in need of a new top-class goalkeeper than United.
Lloris is turning 36 soon and while goalkeepers do have brilliant longevity, it won’t be long before he starts declining at this age.
Oblak would be the perfect replacement for the France captain, and while United would like him, De Gea is more than serviceable for the Red Devils over the next few years.
This may be a bit of a transfer race, but Spurs need to make sure it’s one that they win because there aren’t many potential Lloris replacements out there right now.
