Ian Wright has not exactly been effusive with his praise of Everton’s Michael Keane, when commenting on his performance for England last night to ITV, during their live coverage.

Everton’s Keane was rewarded for his fine start to the season, with a start for his country yesterday.

Keane helped England keep a clean-sheet as they beat Wales 3-0.

But Wright didn’t feel that the Everton man totally made the central defensive role his own, and he has suggested that Wolves’ Conor Coady has a real chance of breaking into Gareth Southgate’s squad as a result.

“When you look at Michael Keane, he played okay today – wouldn’t say he was unbelievable,” Wright said.

“Conor Coady, I’ve been a massive fan of for years, he’s been given a chance and he’s come in and he’s taken it.

“It depends on the rest of the guys now to step up.”

England’s centre-back position does seem extremely open, with none of Southgate’s options entirely convincing.

Keane has arguably been in the best form of any English centre-back so far this season, as he has excelled at the heart of Everton’s defence.

The 27-year-old has been a mainstay in Everton’s team, with Carlo Ancelotti’s side making a perfect start to the new campaign.

England still have games against Belgium and Denmark to play over the next fortnight, so Keane is likely to get more game time for the Three Lions before returning to Everton duty.
