West Ham secured passage to the quarter-finals of the League Cup after beating Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City on penalties.
The east London side survived 90 minutes of football that saw the reigning League Cup holders pepper the West Ham backline. Yet the Hammers were able to take the match to penalties and eliminate City from the competition for the first time in five years.
Guardiola’s City were the favourites to retain the League Cup, a trophy they’ve held onto since 2018. Yet for the first time in a long time, the Manchester giants won’t be lifting the cup at Wembley Stadium.
Yet despite going out on penalties, the City boss was courageous and respectful in defeat. With Guardiola lauding West Ham for their win against the Premier League champions.
Guardiola said about West Ham via Football London: ” They’re one of the toughest opponents we played at home last season.
“They are doing well in the Premier League and in the Europa League and now in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. They’re a fantastic team with a fantastic manager.”
