Roy Keane has suggested that he would have been going mad at Harry Kane, if he had been in the same team as the Tottenham Hotspur man yesterday.
Kane started up-front for England and scored in their game against Albania, but the Spurs striker frustrated a number of the ITV pundits at half-time.
They suggested that Kane should have being looking to stay in a higher role, rather than dropping deep.
Kane has played as both a number 10 and a number nine for Tottenham this season, on advice from Jose Mourinho, and he has earned great praise for it.
But when asked whether he would be telling Kane to move forward, if he was on the pitch, Keane said: “I wouldn’t be that polite to him! When you’re dominating possession, stay up high on the pitch. We know where you can do the damage.”
Kane will argue that his ability to drop deep is now a key part of his game, and he did claim a goal and assist yesterday – so there couldn’t be too much criticism of his display.
But whether England are set up in the same way as Tottenham, who constantly try to get runners in behind Kane, is very much up for debate.
There may be an argument to suggest that Kane should stay higher against lesser opponents when on international duty.
But Kane has also proven that he is so much more than just a penalty box finisher in recent seasons at Spurs, and Gareth Southgate may feel that he limits the striker, by not allowing him the freedom to get on the ball in deeper positions.
