All the talk of Jose Mourinho has got supporters excited. If Harry Redknapp stays, do fans have the confidence that he could take the club to the next level?
Irrespective of whether the club finish third or fourth, the feeling around White Hart Lane is that next season Tottenham must step up.
This year should be a launching pad to a Premier League title challenge next year, and even a crack at the Champions League.
Right now the squad is close, four or five top signings could turn them into legitimate contenders.
A man with Jose Mourinho’s track record would certainly be able to achieve those aspirations.
And it is that thought which is confusing Tottenham fans.
Should they ungratefully hope Redknapp takes the England job?
If they can get Mourinho then many would argue it would be a great swap, but his arrival is purely speculative at present, with Chelsea also strongly interested, and no guarantee he will even leave Real Madrid.
So if Harry Redknapp was to decide to stay, it would be bittersweet for Tottenham fans.
His capability in leading a title challenge is unproven, and last time he took Spurs into the Champions League he was unable to balance the two, with the club regressing into fifth.
So supporters are right to wonder, and should not feel guilty if they feel a tinge of disappointment if he elects to stay.
Of course any negative feelings towards Redknapp will be blurred by their recent three league defeats on the bounce.
The club will surely get back to their early season form, with a good fixture list ahead, and then more balanced reasoning will take over.
Right now many Tottenham fans don’t know what they want, and will be keen to get to the end of the season without further damage, let the England saga play out, and assess their options properly.
But if talk of ‘the Special one’ turns out to be just gossip, then excited fans may well feel disappointed if it was ‘just’ Redknapp in charge next season.
