According to a report from The Sun over the weekend, Southampton are interested in signing Tottenham defender Kyle Walker-Peters on loan for the rest of the season, and Spurs may be willing to sanction the 20-year-old’s temporary exit.

Walker-Peters has struggled for game-time this season, with his only Premier League start coming on the opening day of the campaign, while he has only made one top flight appearance since then.

A loan move therefore, makes a lot of sense it seems. But, with The Sun suggesting that the Saints are looking for cover for Cedric Soares, is it really a smart move from Spurs to allow Walker-Peters to head to St Mary’s?

The academy graduate appears to have the potential to be an important player for Mauricio Pochettino’s side in the future, so getting game-time if he does leave on loan should be a priority so Walker-Peters can develop his game further.

But surely the Saints would not be able to offer the kind of game-time that the full-back is looking for if Mauricio Pellegrino deems him to be potential cover for Cedric.

With Jeremy Pied also in the squad – though rarely-used despite some decent displays – the youngster is potentially facing a similar battle trying to get into the Saints squad.

Letting the prospect out on loan certainly makes plenty of sense from Tottenham’s perspective, but with Southampton not exactly short of options at right-back, perhaps sending him to the Saints would be a questionable decision unless they received assurances over playing time.
