Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a trio of players who are not good enough if they want to start collecting silverware.

Everton's Ross Barkley in action

According to a recent report from the Express, Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino wants to bring Andre Gray, Wilfried Zaha and Ross Barkley to White Hart Lane this summer.

The names will be no surprise to those Spurs fans who regularly read the gossip columns, but are they really the players to take Tottenham to the next level, or could their arrival actually take the North London club backwards in the race for silverware next season and beyond?

After all, the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City are all expected to throw tens if not hundreds of millions at this club or that to bring the next wave of superstars to the Premier League, and for all the above trio’s qualities, they are not world-class or anywhere near.

In a year when United signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, when City signed Gabriel Jesus, Leroy Sane and Ilkay Gundogan and when Chelsea brought in Michy Batshuayi just to sit him on the bench, Tottenham went for Vincent Janssen and Moussa Sissoko.

Victor Wanyama has been a huge plus but the simple fact is Tottenham are not going to get any closer to the other big guns unless they aim higher in the transfer market.

After all, they are a Champions League club, in the capital, with a wonderful new stadium in the works. What is not appealing about that?

Some Spurs fans may argue that it does not need to be like that; that they possess some of the most exciting young players in Europe and in time they will blossom into a great side both domestically and in Europe, but Barkley, Gray and Zaha are not the answer. Not if Tottenham really want to win the title.
