Would Spurs’ Marcus Edwards prove risky signing for Newcastle?

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur youngster Marcus Edwards this summer.

According to a recent report from the Chronicle, Newcastle are considering a move for Tottenham attacking midfielder Marcus Edwards as Rafa Benitez considers potential signings who could play in the number 10 role at St James’ Park.

Of the names linked, Edwards appears to be the most surprising with the Chronicle also suggesting that the likes of Jack Grealish and James Maddison are also on Newcastle’s radar.

And with Benitez looking to build on his side’s top-half finish in their first year back in the Premier League, it is surely fair to suggest that signing Edwards would represent a huge gamble from the Magpies even if he costs significantly less than some of the other attacking options on Newcastle’s wishlist.

The Guardian reported this past week that Edwards is looking to leave Spurs this summer after accepting that he has virtually no chance of forcing his way into the first-team despite once being compared to Lionel Messi by Mauricio Pochettino.

The Guardian added that Edwards is still highly thought of at Spurs and they have high hopes for his career, but they are ready to let him leave – and that should perhaps tempt Benitez to rethink whether he is the right target for the Magpies this summer.

The 19-year-old has made one appearance for Spurs and had a chance to shine when sent out on loan to Norwich City in January. However, the temporary move certainly did not go to plan with Edwards ending his loan with the Canaries with just six minutes of game-time under his belt.

Edwards perhaps has the potential to prove a stunning signing for Newcastle if a move helps the attacker get back on track in his career, but his spell at Carrow Road suggests that any move would be a significant gamble that offers poor odds on actually paying off.
