Instead of focusing on Max Meyer should Tottenham compete with Liverpool for his Schalke teammate Leon Goretzka?
Schalke’s midfielder Max Meyer vies for the ball during the Bundesliga football match vs VfB Stuttgart.
Mauricio Pochettino, manager of Tottenham Hotspur.
The Germany international is out of contract next summer and was once recognised as the one of most promising young talents in European football, but in truth this season has been largely poor.
In fact perhaps Spurs should be looking at another player from the Veltins-Arena who has a number of similarities with Meyer – Leon Goretzka.
Also 22-years-old, also a senior international for the Germans and also out of contract at the end of this season, Goretzka has been in far better form recently and the Liverpool Echo reports that Liverpool are interested as a result.
Schalke’s midfielder Leon Goretzka (R) and Bayern Munich’s Spanish midfielder Thiago Alcantara vie for the ball.
Admittedly not the same sort of midfielder as Meyer – who although has played in many positions this term from defensive midfield to striker, is generally considered a number ten – he is perhaps a better prospect for Tottenham.
Goretzka operates more deeply than his teammate but is attack-minded with three Bundesliga goals in eight outings in 2017/18 and could be the ideal signing to compete with Dele Alli, or perhaps Harry Winks a little further back.
