Newcastle United could make a move for Belgium boss Roberto Martinez.
Newcastle United are still reeling from Rafael Benitez’s exit, but they may be lining up a fellow Spaniard to take over at St James’ Park.
The Sun claim that Newcastle will go all out for Belgium boss Roberto Martinez, potentially offering him a Premier League return three years since his Everton exit.
It remains to be seen whether Newcastle can actually secure Martinez given his fine work with Belgium, but one man who may have an eye on the situation is Everton’s James McCarthy.
Earlier this summer, TEAMtalk reported that Benitez wanted to land McCarthy if he stayed at Newcastle, but obviously any move has been shelved with Benitez gone.
However, a move to St James’ Park may be even more likely if Martinez gets the job, given that the Spaniard signed him for Wigan and then at Everton in 2013.
Martinez has hailed McCarthy over the years, and having signed him in his last two clubs jobs, it would be little surprise to see Martinez move for the Everton man again if he heads to Newcastle.
The 28-year-old has battled back from a host of injury problems over the years, and may find himself down the pecking order at Everton, behind Andre Gomes, Idrissa Gueye and Tom Davies.
That would make a move away more appealing, and Newcastle are likely to be in the market for another midfielder with Mohamed Diame gone and Isaac Hayden expected to move on too.
The stars may align for McCarthy to make the move to Newcastle after all, with Martinez such a huge fan of a player that Benitez seemingly wanted to lure to Tyneside.
