Celtic are reportedly keen on Edouard and the Tottenham Hotspur youth.
If it wasn’t obvious before, Celtic will more than likely be signing a striker this summer – but could they be signing two?
According to The Daily Mail, Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is keen on a £5 million permanent deal for PSG-owned Odsonne Edouard, who impressed during his season-long loan at Parkhead last term, while The Mirror also reports that the Hoops want Tottenham Hotspur youngster Reo Griffiths.
But would signing both represent a bit of a risk by Rodgers?
The Northern Irishman may need to replace linked-away Moussa Dembele but is it wise to sign at least one proven and experienced goalscorer?
Edouard is 20 and doesn’t turn 21 until January, while Griffiths, who has 34 goals for Tottenham’s youth side, turns 18 in June. Celtic fans may argue that the French striker is established in the Scottish Premiership, but he isn’t proven as Rodgers’s first-choice option.
He managed 11 goals in 29 games for the Hoops across all competitions last term, which isn’t a bad return by any means, but it would have to be a whole lot better to justify a £5 million purchase and the fact is that, despite potential, he hasn’t proven that he can shoulder the burden of needing to score goals for Rodgers.
Griffiths also seems to have a very promising future but until the Tottenham starlet proves that he can be as prolific in senior football as he is in youth football then Rodgers probably shouldn’t be replacing Dembele with him.
Leigh Griffiths, who scored 40 goals for the Hoops during the 2015-16 campaign, is a phenomenal goalscorer in Scotland, but is Edouard or his namesake good enough to displace him? Arguably not, and if Rodgers doesn’t find at least one striker to keep Griffiths on the bench then it’s already a step down from Dembele.
