Glasgow Rangers have reportedly put the wheels in motion to bring Steven Davis back to Ibrox, but perhaps another former Ger could be a better target.

The report suggests that the Gers are likely to sign Davis on loan in January with the option to make the move for the Southampton captain permanent in the summer.
Davis – who earns £60,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – would arguably be a good signing. Rangers have a lot of depth in the middle of the park, but the 33-year-old would still improve Steven Gerrard’s options if he did arrive.
But perhaps Rangers have just been linked with another former player who would actually be an even better signing for the Gers as they look to keep building on the progress that they have made during the opening months of Gerrard’s tenure.

It would certainly appear that Davis is much higher on Rangers’ list of priorities – the report on MacLeod gives the impression that no bids are currently being planned – but perhaps MacLeod would be a smarter addition.
The 24-year-old’s injury record in the Championship means that signing Davis would probably be less of a gamble, but MacLeod appears to have put his torrid spell behind him.

He has scored two goals in 13 Championship appearances this term, and is, of course, considerably younger than Davis. And his contract situation means that he could potentially arrive for a bargain fee.
Davis would hardly be an underwhelming signing if he does arrive in January, but perhaps Gerrard should be tempted to leave his options open – just as MacLeod reportedly has.
