Rob Green was a star for Leeds United last season, and played under Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink previously.

A report in the Daily Mirror suggested that Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink may be in contention for the Leeds job as Andrea Radrizzani continues to look for Garry Monk’s successor.

While the Whites squad are likely to be pleased about a potential appointment – whoever that may be – one player in the Leeds side may perhaps be slightly more concerned if Hasselbaink is handed the chance to return to Elland Road 18 years after his spell as a player at the club came to an end.

Rob Green proved to be an inspired signing for Leeds last season, putting in several man of the match-worthy displays following his free transfer from Queens Park Rangers, subsequently earning a one-year contract extension (via Yorkshire Evening Post) that was met with plenty of delight from the Leeds fans.

However, it was during Hasselbaink’s spell as manager of the Hoops that Green was frozen out with the Daily Mail reporting that QPR were avoiding selecting him to ensure that he did not trigger an appearance-related extension clause in his contract.

The 37-year-old’s final appearance for the club came in January 2016, less than a month after Hasselbaink had arrived at Loftus Road and several months before his actual departure.

While Hasselbaink may have perhaps simply been carrying out the club’s orders by not selecting Green, it could be argued that he could have tried to overrule the club’s hierarchy if he felt that the former England stopper was worthy of an extra year on his contract.

And it must be mentioned that Green’s superb year with Leeds came as a surprise to many, perhaps including Hasselbaink, so there is, of course, a chance – if he is given the job – that the Dutchman will be keen to keep faith with the veteran.

But given how his time with QPR ended, it would hardly be a surprise if Green seeks some clarity on his role almost immediately if Hasselbaink is given the job.
