Vincent Aboubakar is in the form of his life for Porto – unfortunately Newcastle United missed their chance for a £9m deal.

With almost every game that goes by, Newcastle United’s failure to invest in a really top level striker in the summer looks to be taking a rather substantial chunk out of their backside.
The Magpies have now won just one of their last six Premier League games as their impressive start to life back in the top flight falters. And it’s obviously no coincidence that The Magpies have scored just four times in that poor run of form.
So far in 2017/18, Joselu, Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic have a combined three goals between them. It’s a less than impressive figure that pales into comparison to the red-hot form of summer target Vincent Aboubakar.

Futbol Arena reported in June that Newcastle had hoped to sign the Cameroon powerhouse from Porto for as little as £9 million. Aboubakar was facing an uncertain future in Portugal after they loaned him out to Besiktas in 2016/17, where his 12 goals in 16 starts inspired the Istanbul giants to the Super Lig title.
By the time the transfer window shut, however, Aboubakar was still a Porto player. Two months on, he’s now their undisputed star man. With nine goals in 11 Primeira Liga outings, a striker Newcastle have tracked since his formative years in Ligue 1 with Lorient is in the form of his life right now.
Only the prolific Benfica frontman Jonas has more league strikes while Porto lead the way after 11 games played, four points clear of Sporting Lisbon.

Newcastle’s current strikers could only dream of being valued so highly.
