Would Philipp Max be better off picking Tottenham or Everton over Manchester City?

Tottenham Hotspur and Everton are both reportedly interested in Bundesliga star Philipp Max.

According to a recent report from the Daily Mail, Manchester City have become the latest side to start monitoring Augsburg left-back Philipp Max, whose form has also caught the eye of both Tottenham and Everton in recent times.

The 24-year-old has been sensational in the Bundesliga this term, providing nine assists in just 17 top flight games, including four in his last five to make him the most prolific provider of assists across any of Europe’s top leagues this season.

The Mail reports that Tottenham and Everton are among the Premier League sides to have started scouting the defender, but they will now have to see off competition from the runaway leaders in the division if they want to secure his signature.

The Mail suggests that Pep Guardiola wants cover for Benjamin Mendy – who is currently sidelined with a long-term injury – and that has prompted him to have a look at the Augsburg man.

But given why City are looking at Max, surely the German would be better off picking either Tottenham or Everton if they were to come calling rather than Guardiola’s men.

With Mendy injured, he would probably enjoy plenty of first-team football if he were to join in January – but as soon as the summer signing returns, you would imagine that it could quite easily become a frustrating situation for Max.

Meanwhile, Everton arguably need to uncover a long-term replacement for Leighton Baines, while Spurs may have a void to fill on the left-hand side of the defence if Danny Rose ends up leaving in January – as the Daily Mirror recently suggested that he may.

With Spurs and the Toffees, Max arguably has the potential to establish himself as the first-choice left-back in the squad, whereas a move to City may be more of a gamble depending on Mendy’s situation – so surely he should look past the current league table and consider the chance to join Tottenham or Everton more appealing than the chance to move to the Etihad.
