Wolves missed out on signing Jack Colback on loan this summer but do they really regret failing to sign the Newcastle United midfielder?
It speaks volumes about how much Wolves have progressed this season that a £40,000-a-week player with almost 200 Premier League appearances under his belt probably wouldn’t get in their starting XI right now.
The Chronicle reports that Newcastle United outcast Jack Colback was offered the chance to move to Molineux on loan after being informed in no uncertain terms by manager Rafa Benitez that he was not part of his plans for this season.
The local lad Colback, however, turned down the deal as he wanted to stay in the North East. And the 28-year-old has now wasted half a season in the reserves.
But with the report adding that Leeds United and Birmingham City sent scouts to watch Colback in action for the Under-23s this week, it is interesting to note that Wolves were conspicuous by their absence.
Though where would Colback even fit in at Molineux? Wolves’ squad is arguably stronger than the Newcastle side who won the Championship last season. And if Colback could not nail down a starting place in that team, the chances of him being an integral figure for Nuno Espirito Santo look remote at best.
In £15.8 million Portuguese international Ruben Neves, Wolves have arguably the Championship’s best central midfielder, a player who run the game from the centre of the park.
Nuno can also call upon Alfred N’Diaye, Jack Price, the versatile Conor Coady and Moroccan international Romain Saiss – so impressive he was linked to Liverpool by Liberacion.
Colback, then, would probably be fourth choice – which is not much higher up the pecking order than he currently finds himself at Newcastle.
