The powerful France midfielder was often heralded by pundits and fans of other teams despite Newcastle’s struggles.

But Magpies fans told a different story and grew tired of his lacklustre displays as Rafa Benitez tried in vain to keep the club in the Premier League.

He was bombarded with hateful messages after revealing he wanted to leave Newcastle, as reported by the Metro.

And it was telling that the Geordies were quick to mock Tottenham Hotspur when Mauricio Pochettino forked out a remarkable £30 million for Sissoko last summer despite his outstanding displays at Euro 2016.

But since his big money move things haven’t gone well for Sissoko with the London Evening Standard claiming he is keen to leave Spurs this summer after ‘the worst season of my life’.

The likes of West Ham and Marseille have been linked with a move for Sissoko, but with Newcastle back in the top flight could Benitez bring him back to St James’ Park?

While it may not prove the most popular move, Newcastle could get him for a knockdown fee given the second instalment of the huge transfer fee is now due, as reported by the Chronicle Live.

At 27, Sissoko is still relatively young and should be approaching his prime. He also proved he can produce at the top level when he starred for France last summer.

And Benitez needs proven Premier League players as he plots a summer of rebuilding to make the Magpies a force again in the top flight.
